A Full Plate: Dark Dining with Chef Adrianne Calvo

The Collective Plate‘s sole mission is to share our eating adventures with you time and time again. We’re constantly on the lookout for the latest, greatest, and most exciting so we can bring it to our readers. After hearing great reviews about the Dark Dining experience at Chef Adrianne’s Vineyard Restaurant and Wine Bar, a few of us booked a table for the February dinner. If you’re planning on attending, make sure to call the restaurant ahead so you can buy your tickets. (Note: tickets are $50 per head and walk-ins are not permitted.) The staff told us to get there at least 15 minutes ahead of time since they like to have everyone seated and ready before 8pm.

If you’ve never been to Chef Adrianne’s restaurant, it looks like the beautiful dinner date location described in books or movies. With its dark wood paneling and dim lightning, it’s the very definition of cozy, rustic, and romantic. Since the theme was Aphrodisiacs, the lighting was covered with red scarves and there were candles in some areas. During the Dark Dining experience, each guest is blindfolded while they are served then told to taste the dish in front of them. You’re then supposed to guess what you’re eating. Aside from taste, the key is to use your other senses, which have (hopefully) been heightened while you get used to being ‘blind’ for the moment. Each dish that we had was so delicious and was accompanied by a matching glass of wine. And while all of us agreed that the flavor factor was fantastic, we also noted that the portions were more on par with a tasting rather than a full dinner.

The best part of the entire evening was the Chef Adrianne’s company. With her infectious laugh and vibrant personality, it’s easy to see why she’s so popular. With each course that was presented, she gave a detailed commentary on why she chose the ingredient and their aphrodisiac qualities. Calvo is a chef who knows what she’s doing and loves to do it. Extra points for the mini culinary education lesson!

If you’re an adventurous foodie in the South Florida area, we recommend trying Chef Adrianne’s Dark Dining experience. And like most eating experiences, the more the merrier so bring a few of your food-loving friends or your special someone. Happy eating!
