The Spring Beer Festival Sprung! is right around the corner. On March 9th, South Florida craft beer lovers get the amazing chance to try a huge collection of spring craft beers from around the world. I was lucky enough to get a chance to have a chat with Tony Albelo, the event director, on some of his views and why he brought the Spring festival Sprung to South Florida.

Q: Why create a Spring craft beer festival in South Florida?
A:  Running events are my passion. Around three years ago, I really got into craft beers and said to my friend, “Let’s create a craft beer event for South Florida.” At that time the only big beer festival was located all the way in Jupiter. This gave birth to Grovetoberfest which is a huge beer event held in Coconut Grove in October. Over 6,000 people attended and many people were inquiring about a spring beer festival. So Sprung was brought to life.

Q: Can you tell us more about Sprung?
A:  Sprung is a celebration of spring craft beers. We are giving the people of South Florida a chance to try many different craft beers, some not even available to South Floridians. There will be a food and beer pairing demo. Also there will be games, including beer drinking classics like beer pong. The atmosphere will be fun and lively, and of course great beer!

Q: What beers should we definitely try?
A: That’s a tough one. To be honest, there are so many great beers… give them all a try!

Q: What do you hope to achieve from this festival?
A: We want to give the people of South Florida the chance to try many different craft beers, showing them there is more than just the typical commercial beers out there. Also the beer and food pairing will show which beers can really help bring out the flavor of certain foods. Beer, because of the carbonation, is actually a better palate cleanser then wine. All of this helps inspire people to home brew as well, which is a great thing for South Florida. Florida’s beer business is ranked number 4 out of all the states, but ranked 44th in beer brewing. So there is definitely room for improvement on that front.

After talking to Tony Albelo for some time, I knew he was a man that was passionate about craft beers. I love the fact that he is opening the eyes and taste buds of many people to the great world of craft beers. I for one am very excited to attend Sprung and try all the beers until my heart is content!

Stay tuned to our Instagram and Twitter on March 9th for live updates!
