Sip This, Not That: Glenfiddich Malt Master’s Edition

There was a time when I wouldn’t go near whiskey. I always found it a bit too strong for my taste but times have changed. Introduced by friends who are big fans of the amber-hued spirit, I was pretty excited about the chance to try the latest from Scottish whiskey house, Glenfiddich.

Still family owned and operated, the Malt Master’s Edition embodies the brand’s 125 year whiskey-making history. Created by Malt Master, Brian Kinsman, there will only be 18,000 bottles available for purchase in the United States – with possibly only around 1,000 in the South Florida area. Glenfiddich hosted an intimate tasting at STK with whiskey expert and brand ambassador, David Allardice, and I was lucky enough to attend. Malt Master is significant in that it utilizes the double maturation process, allowing for a unique flavor from the use of two different woods – first oak, then finished off in sherry.

Both smoky and sweet, Kinsman’s creation combines strong notes of vanilla with a spiced fruit background. After a few sips, you’ll note one of my favorite flavors: toasted almonds. It finishes quite smoothly and I found it easy to move on to round two. Our small group enjoyed Kobe sliders and tasty truffle fries compliments of STK while David shared his deep knowledge of the making of some of the most sought after whiskies in the world.

Here’s what I learned:

1.  Whether it’s straight up, on the rocks, with a drop of water, or mixed in – Malt Masters believe in having your whiskey just the way YOU like it. Cheers! Looking for a new mixed recipe? Give The Ruby Bean a try.
2. Let your taste buds govern how good a whiskey is – not how long it’s been aged.
3. The man behind Malt Master’s Edition is a chemist by trade. Pretty cool huh? Brian Kinsman apprenticed for 8 years under former Malt Master, David Stewart, who held the position for 35 years.

The limited edition bottles will retail for $79.99 so ask your local liquor store if Glenfiddich Malt Master’s Edition is in stock. Let me know what you think!

“It is a true honor to be the sixth Malt Master at Glenfiddich during the distillery’s milestone 125th Anniversary year,” said Malt Master Brian Kinsman. “Glenfiddich established the single malt Scotch whisky category in 1963, when we became the first distillery to successfully export outside Scotland. I am proud to launch the Glenfiddich Malt Master’s Edition as a tribute to the pioneering history that goes into each and every bottle of whisky we produce. The aim with all of our limited edition expressions is to showcase the distillery’s special quality of the liquid, which this rare innovation captures so beautifully.”
